We celebrate 10 year FNCC anniversary with a Retrospective Exhibition by Joe Madisia.

Joseph Madisia, director of the National Art Gallery of Namibia, will open a retrospective exhibition of his art on Monday, 1st of March, at the FNCC. The prolific and inspired Madisia, wishing to share his work and its evolution with local art lovers, will present selected lino cuts and cardboard prints covering a creative period of almost 30 years. Fela Kuti’s motto, “No condition is permanent”, serves as leitmotiv of this retrospective.

About Joseph Madisia:
Born in Lüderitz in 1954, young Madisia left his home town to train as a carpenter and worked in a fish factory during his twenties, a theme reflected in many of his prints of the 1990’s. It was only while working for a mine near Swakopmund that Madisia actively started to pursue his interest in art. He instantly became known with his first exhibition in Windhoek in 1982 and has since then repeatedly gained recognition for the figurative, realistic and ornamental depictions of Namibia’s social conditions in his work. Local art historian, Adelheid Lilienthal, describes his art in “Art in Namibia” as follows: “Madisia’s works, filled to capacity with innumerable interlocking sections of everyday life, symbols and ciphers, are expressions of the conflict ridden living conditions of the townships.” Today, Madisia’s works can be found in many national and overseas collections.

Celebrating 20 years of Namibian Independence as well as its own 10th anniversary on the current premises in 118 Robert Mugabe Avenue, Windhoek, the FNCC wishes to honour Joe Madisia, a local artist intimately involved with the centre since its inception.
As first Namibian artist, Madisia offered art classes at the FNCC when the centre opened in Windhoek West some 18 years ago. Through his teaching he initiated a new common artistic experience among young black artists; a fact which earned him the title of ‘midwife’ in local artistic circles, after an article published in the Windhoek Advertiser of 8 August 1992 quoted him as follows: “I really feel like a midwife knowing that I have been personally involved in this creative explosion of a new breed on the Namibian artistic scene.”
